Here is a beautiful hunting knife produced by Pierre Reverdy for the famous Holland & Holland Company.

"Perhaps the highest form (of pattern welded steel) was developed in Japan. The Japanese through a process of forge welding wrought iron and a high carbon product called tamahagane produced swords of exceptional quality and beauty." Don Fogg
The japanese process has been described in pictures in a French cartoon.
